John Wayne Airport
Major Airport Expansion and Modernization in Orange County
John Wayne Airport has played an important role in Southern California transportation for more than a century. Originally known as Orange County Airport, the facility dates to 1923, when it consisted of a single runway and small terminal building constructed for approximately $35,000.
As Orange County grew, so did the demands placed on its aviation infrastructure. By the late twentieth century, the airport required a major expansion capable of accommodating increasing passenger traffic while improving safety, efficiency, and the overall traveler experience.
The 1990 John Wayne Airport Project
The 1990 John Wayne Airport Project represented a significant transformation of the airport.
The approximately $375 million project included construction of a new terminal building, multiple parking structures, and improvements to the airport's existing runway and taxiway systems.
Funding came from several sources, including grants through the Federal Aviation Administration and Airport Improvement Program, airport-generated revenue, and bonds issued by the airport.
The project was completed in 1992, substantially increasing the airport's capacity and creating infrastructure capable of supporting the continued growth of Orange County and the surrounding region.
Continued Investment in Airport Infrastructure
Airport construction does not end when a new terminal opens. Aviation facilities must continually respond to passenger growth, changing technology, operational demands, and evolving safety and security standards.
John Wayne Airport subsequently underwent additional expansions and upgrades, culminating in the John Wayne Airport Improvement Program, which was completed in 2019.
The approximately $1.1 billion improvement program further modernized airport infrastructure and passenger facilities while addressing the safety, capacity, and operational requirements of a major regional airport.
The Complexity of Aviation Construction
Major airport projects present unusual construction challenges. Work must often occur within or adjacent to active aviation facilities while coordinating terminals, parking structures, runways, taxiways, utilities, security systems, and passenger operations.
These environments can create technically and contractually sophisticated disputes involving numerous contractors, designers, engineers, public agencies, and specialty trades.
Construction Lawyers brings decades of legal, engineering, and dispute-resolution experience to complex construction matters, including major public infrastructure projects throughout California.
